The sharbats paradise “Paramount’

When the whole city of Kolkata was gearing up for the shopping on the last Sunday before the festival, We travelled all the way to our destination the famous College street , the hustle bustle and the never ending jams had taken away the last drop of energy left in us. We could have easily opted for of the famous branded soft drinks, but my mother suggested we should try the famous ‘DABER sharbat’ of Paramount for quenching our thirst .After taking directions from one of my friends over the phone we reached the place.
At the first glance what I found was a very simple looking place with hardly anything that you would take notice of , But as soon we took the first sip from our drinks I understood what made this place one of the top ten sought places of Kolkata. Soon out of inquisitiveness, I started a small conversation with the Shop owner Mr mazumdar a very homely and friendly person. I was more then surprised to know that the place was founded in the year 1918 and for almost a century has been serving customers in the city hub where many of our Globally recognized intellectuals were born like Narayan Gangopadhyay and Nabanita Dev Sen and Nobel laureates like Amartya Sen and C.V.Raman the list seemed to be endless. In the beginning years of it’s foundation heroes of country like Netaji Shubhash and Acharaya jagadish chandra basu were amongst the regular visitors. The Founder Mr Niharanjan mazumdar with collaboration of Acharaya Prafulla Chandra Ray had made this famous ‘Daber sharbat’( Coconut water Drink ) keeping in mind the students who were from not so well off families and needed some drink which could not only quench their thirst but provided a good source of energy. With the passing years the menu had come up with new varieties of drinks like Mango, vanilla and others keeping in mind the taste of upcoming generations. Every year the place is visited by people across the globe. I found this place as true symbols of the city’s past glory and heritage.

After having a long conversation we all left the shop with a fine lingering taste of glorious heritage of Kolkata in our mouth and hearts.
